The Turano Lake

The Turano Lake

Lake Turano is an artificial lake located in the province of Rieti, Lazio, on the edge of the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia nature reserve.
Lake Turano is a beautiful sheet of water of artificial origin that extends into the heart of the Cicolano Mountains, a large mountain range in the province of Rieti. The lake was created in 1939 following the damming of the Turano River. The work would have served both to produce hydroelectric power and to prevent possible flooding of the nearby Rieti Plain. Approximately 10 km long, it lies at an elevation of 536 meters and one must travel about 36 km to make the complete circumnavigation of its jagged shores.
One characteristic of Lake Turano, in fact, is that its shores are continually interrupted by inlets, headlands and small beaches. We can imagine, therefore, what a spectacle can be presented to the visitor who travels along the circumlacual road from which he or she can admire the lake from every angle and to enjoy striking glimpses toward the surrounding green mountains.
